The Challenge
As one of their available services, RaceIt offers live split time tracking for spectators and event organizers.  Prior to the mobile application development effort, the only way a spectator could receive the live split times was to sign up for SMS-Text alerts through RaceIt.com.  While this functionality is powerful and helps spectators to keep track of race participants they are interested in, the medium was not very engaging and did not truly utilize the full power of the information available.

RaceIt engaged Ironworks to develop a mobile application that would allow race spectators to truly track race participants in an interesting and engaging way.

The Solution
Ironworks assessed the technology available for disseminating the live split data to subscribers and developed a strategy to implement RESTful web services to be consumed, initially, by a mobile application developed for Apple iOS devices (iPhone and iPod Touch).  The features available within the current version of the RaceIt Mobile application include:

  •  Find races based on the user’s location using the device’s GPS functionality
  • Search for races anywhere by typing in the race name or location
  • View turn-by-turn directions to the race at the touch of a button
  • Use the user’s device contact list and Facebook friends to search the race registrants database
  • Share a race on your Facebook wall
  • View selected participants split times and pace in real time
  • View a countdown until a participant is expected to cross in front of the user
  • View the estimated position of a participant and the user’s location on a race course map

The Results
The Ironworks team helped RaceIt develop a cutting-edge mobile application that is fully-integrated with the features of the mobile device and provides an interesting and engaging medium for their customers to consume their services.  Additionally, the RESTful web services implemented by Ironworks that integrate into RaceIt’s back end systems provide the foundation for future applications such as an equivalent application currently under development for Android devices.

By providing their clients with functionality that is not available anywhere else, RaceIt continues to develop as the premier online solution for event directors.
